Instructor Turns Farm into Hunting Safety Course

Minn. firearms instructor uses ingenuity and land to teach area youths firearm safety.

As first reported by Chris Niskanen on TwinCities.com, Red Wing, Minn. resident Scott Wesch has taken his own property and turned it into a hunting experience.

Wesch has turned part of his 120-acre property into a testing ground for new hunters trying to earn their Minnesota firearms safety certificate. The construction contractor, a certified firearms instructor, spent eight years building rifle and archery ranges, along with walking trails and other testing grounds, that rival anything found at a professional shooting range.

Wesch's dream was to create a facility in which novice hunters could test their skills in the field as part of their training to get their firearms safety certificate. Every spring, several dozen students and volunteers gather at Wesch's farm to pass their final firearms training field test in gun handling and hunting scenarios.

Wesch said he paid for the training facility out of his own pocket, but recently the DNR gave him a small grant to update it. Chuck Niska, the DNR's shooting range coordinator, said Wesch's facility is one of the state's best for helping train young hunters.
