Hornady Announces Steel Match Ammunition

Polymer-coated, Steel-cased ammunition saves considerably on manufacturing costs, which means more bullets at the range.

11/4/2010

Hornady has announced its latest ammunition designed for competitive shooting, Hornady Steel Match. Hornady Steel Match features the same bullets and powders as traditional Hornady ammunition, but features a polymer-coated steel casing instead of brass. The end result is the same reliability and performance from normal brass-cased ammunition at a fraction of the price, due to the lower material cost.

Hornady Steel Match ammo is designed to be used in high-volume competitions, when shooters often aren't permitted to pick up their brass as they go through the stages. Instead of leaving all that money on the ground, shooters have the peace of mind that their casings aren't the most important part of the match, their scores are.

Each Hornady Steel Match cartridge uses non-corrosive berdan primers, Hornady Action Pistol (HAP) or Hornady Match bullets, and is engineered to comply with all major shooting regulations regarding power. Steel Match .40 S&W, .45 ACP and .308 Win. meet all IPSC, USPSA and IDPA "major" power factor performance criteria, but are kept to moderate velocities to minimize recoil and muzzle flip. In addition, Steel Match 9 mm and .223 Rem. both meet "minor" power factor criteria.

Hornady Steel Match will initially be available in popular handgun and rifle calibers, including 9 mm Luger, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .223 Rem., .30 carbine and .308 Win. MSRP may be as much as 40% cheaper than similar brass-cased ammunition.

Comments...my only problem is the cost. I just $27 a box here in central Nebraska. That's a lot when I can get FMJ for $17.

There is a couple ranges in San Diego CA that allow Steel cased ammo, P2K being one of them but they charge by the hour

Some seem to be not reading this correctly, it isn't steel core it is steel case ammo, like the Russians have used/made for years. It is less expensive without Brass cases.

My problem with this ammo is that many ranges in my area will not allow steel cased ammo to be used on the theory that it is steel cored. Hopefully, since it is Hornady, they will allow this ammo.
