Revisiting Speer's Big-Game Bullets (Page 2)

Speer’s new DeepCurl bullets contain better terminal ballistics.

Sometimes change is for the better, and such is the case with DeepCurl. Although Hot-Cor will surely be missed, its replacement is better with regard to terminal ballistics. Hunters who field them will surely agree. So what does the future hold for Speer’s other big-game bullets? Only time will tell.

Interesting to note with all the hype nowadays about 'premium' bullets that in a 13 year study conducted with Yukon guides shooting 35 caliber rifles ranging from the old 35 Rem up thru 358 Norma Mag the one bullet that scored the highest overall but cost the least was the 250gr Hot Core. In overall performance on Yukon moose it scored right with all the premium stuff and took a back seat to none! Good going Speer!!

Glad to see Speer revisited, but sad to hear the Hot Cor is on its way out. I have developed super accurate loads with the Speer .30 cal 150gr Hot Cor in .30-06. Also amazing is the terminal performance compared with competitor's bullets offered. I have performed expantion tests, and ALL of the competitor's bullets separated, but I never had a Hot Cor come apart, and this is including over 100 recoveries. I just hope that my supply of the Hot Cor lasts awhile. My Dad's 03A3 can shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yds with these bullets. I have a 1971 Mod 70 that has shot 9/16" 5 shot groups at 185 yds with the 150 gr Hor Cor. Again terminal ballistics have provided all 1 shot kills on Texas hill country white tail since 1976. No misses and no runaways. This kind of performance will be hard to equal. Just as a note, all loads are using H4895...with gobs of other powders experimented with and none have equalled. I have been reloading since 1967, so I am not a novice by any means.

Nothing wrong with the product but its to bad they made a Marketing blunder. Its just plain hard to read the Caliber and Type of slug off the end of the box. The good thing is that that they have a distictive box but you can't tell what's in it.
