Ruger Introduces Gunsite Scout Rifle

This Ruger rendition of Col. Jeff Cooper's concept rifle was designed in conjunction with the head instructor of one of America's most respected shooting academies.

1/3/2011

Sturm, Ruger & Co. announced the Gunsite Scout Rifle, a concept rifle designed in conjunction with the head instructor of one of America's leading shooting schools—Gunsite Academy—and based on the Scout Rifle concept.

The Gunsite Scout Rifle is built on the versatile Ruger M77 platform in .308 Win., attempting to meet the criteria of Col. Jeff Cooper's original concept of the Scout Rifle: a true general purpose firearm that can be used for hunting, fighting and defending.

The Gunsite Scout Rifle features a Mini-14/SR-556 flash suppressor, a 16.5-inch barrel, a non-glare front post sight and rear ghost ring sight and a detachable 10-round box magazine. The MSRP is $995.

I THINK THE NEW SCOUT .308 IS TO SHORT.A 18" BARREL WOULD BE BETTER

I have an FR8 that's the same length and caliber but doesn't have the detachable mag and scope; a sporterized SMLE that lacks the extended eye-relief, and a M96 Mauser with a intermediate eye relief scope. Three rough approximations of the concept, and for the three of them together I didn't pay 1/2 of the MSRP of this rifle. I'm with many of the other commenters. Great idea, lousy price point. However, if they'd make a Scout Mini-14 with a bull barrel I'd be tempted...

Wow, this is a tough crowd! $499.95 would be an amazing price but it is not realistic... sorry fellow shooters and hunters. I'll bet Ruger could actually still make a profit if they retailed it for a more realistic $699.95. In fact, at that price their biggest problem would be churning out enough of them! Here's what else I'd like to see: 1. A walnut stocked version with all metallic parts including the magazine hard chromed, and; 3. Polymer stocked versions (black, olive drab, multicam, and desert) with a moly over parkerized finish. Lastly, the looks of that flash suppressor are the pits! Bin that one and go with a Vortex Flash Supressor. Ruger, follow my advice and you'll make millions and thousands upon thousands of happy shooters (if it works well and is accurate).

Looks like this would make a nice "sniper cover" rifle with the 10rd mag and quick reload, but would like to see it drilled and tapped for a lower Pic rail for easy bipod attachment. If the Ruger rings would allow re-install of a scope like the new Leupold 1.1-8 scope and not lose zero would be a nice all-around rifle (long range with normal scope attach, red-dot or low power for the scout rifle use (hog hunt anybody?) and irons for leaning in the corner use). In the end though, I keep coming back to the question: If you need mre than 5 rds of .308 in a bolt action you need a DPMS or Armalite or SA .308.... but maybe this gives a hunter an option that adds some tactical value to a familiar package. Kudos to Ruger for stepping out though.

Yikes, the price. Forget it! Buy a savage 110 in 308 for lots less amd use the left over money to buy lots of ammo.

Seriously? I'll take a lever action or semi-auto over this anyday. How about offering the 10/22 style 44 magnum carbine? Smaller lighter and no magazine to snag on every vine or bush while navigating through brush, and plenty of power. The .308 is a great round, M77 great action. M-14/Mini-14 great weapons. The combination as presented, not so great. Price rules this weapon out as well.

Oooh - I'm going to toss a molotov on what already looks like a nice warm fire. Nice idea, for half the MSRP. I am sure it is well-made shooting iron. But a cool G for "compromise rifle"? I'd sooner spend the same on an entry-level AR-clone and call it a day, or for that matter, I'll take an SKS each for me and the wife, or a batch of HiPoint carbines for the whole family. Then again the Win94/Marlin336/etc. is a good "scout" rifle type that's been around for at least a century. Therein lies the rub of any "compromise" shooting iron - no one is going to be 100% happy - but price point is a good place to start changing shooter's minds.

Great Gun!! Great Caliber! Great follow-up on Col Cooper's idea. Graet Company to manufacture it! Piss Poor pricing for a simple bush rifle $499.95! Got that! $4.99.95! And you will sell a bunch of them. Do you think we don't know what a basic version of a Ruger M77 is worth? Stop listening to the marketing morons! Listen to the shooters! $499.95! And I will order one immediatly at 995 I will never buy one. For over 40 years I have trading guns, this over pricing has got to stop!!!!!!

I agree. You can set up any rifle or carbine that way. Cut the price and sell more. People paying that kind of price do it for the badge of 'Look what I got." Ridiculous. I'd axpect better from Ruger.

Stupidly overpriced. This was the problem with the last attempt at a Jeff Cooper rifle, and it died in the marketplace. If folks want to make an "everyman"'s rifle, it needs to be within reach of everyman's pocketbook. Otherwise, you might as well just pick up one of the many affordable and reliable/proven alternatives and call it a day.
