2/2/2011 Salt Lake City, Utah commemorated the life of John M. Browning with John M. Browning Day on January 24, 2011, recognizing the accomplishments of the native Utahan and one of the greatest firearms designers ever to have lived. The festivities took place at the Utah State Capitol, just 30 minutes south of Browning's native Ogden, Utah, where he drew up many of his iconic and lasting designs, and included firearms displays, special historical exhibits and commemorative versions of Browning's most celebrated and longest-lasting design, the M1911 pistol. The celebration came 100 years after the adoption of the Model of 1911 pistol, nearly coinciding with the designer's birthday. The ceremony featured a presentation by Utah Governor Gary Herbert, who granted great-grandson Christopher Browning a copy of the resolution that officially declares the day in John M. Browning's honor. Christopher Browning presented Gov. Herbert with a 1911-22, the newest model from the firearms company that bears Browning's name, and the scaled-down, .22-caliber rimfire version of the famous 1911 pistol.
