The Armed Citizen

In honor of the 125th anniversary of American Rifleman, the following is an excerpt from the September, 1958 issue: The first Armed Citizen.

From the September, 1958 issue of American Rifleman

Law Enforcement officers cannot at all times be where they are needed to protect life or property in danger of serious violation. In many such instances the citizen has no choice but to defend himself with a gun. Below are accounts of recent instances digested from newspaper clippings sent in by NRA Members.

Dr. P.W. Bowman of Washington , D.C. was awakened at 5 A.M. by cries for help from the home of a 91-year-old neighbor. The 69-year-old doctor leaped from his bed, grabbed his pistol, and reached the street just as an armed man was coming from the neighbor’s house.  He ordered the robber to drop his gun and held him at bay while his wife called police. Upon investigation the police found the aged victim had been beaten and robbed. (Aug. 5, Daily News)

Eva McMillan of Dallas, Tex., grabbed a .32 automatic when she saw a prowler in her yard. Pistol in hand, she went outside to investigate and the prowler lunged at her. Miss McMillan fired and he started to run. She fired twice more, ran inside, and called the police who found the wounded prowler cowering on a nearby porch. (May 29, AP)

America has to come to realize that stopping people from buying weapons is not the answer. ONLY people that are legal buy guns from a store. The problem is people like gangbangers don't go to stors but buy them off the streat and could care less about the law. If more poeple would carry guns then this sinsless shoutings would stop as a person that has intent on killing folks at malls, stores even schools KNEW that people were armed thay wouldnet even try as they know they would be shot trying. It is a shame that some people think guns kill people. Ive had a 38 Police Special for almost 20 years and it has NEVER gone off buy itself. We have a right NOT a privaledge to arm ourselves. In the 40's there was a law saying YOU MUST have a gun in your home and in a few states you cannot buy a home unless you have a gun to protect it.I own a few guns and I don't WANT to shoot anybody but push come to shove I will NOT let anybody destroy what I have or take it. Alot of my friends say I'm a little overboard on my defense but I look at it as being prepaired for any thing that may come my way.Even our Vise president said to arm yourself with a shotgun and I agree it is the best gun to have for home defense just for the reason you only need to point in the general direction. We need to ban together and stop our goverment from infrenging on our RIGHTS.If people don't want to arm themselves then don't cry when you needed one to defend yourself but didnt want to have a gun. That is there bussiness but for me I WILL stay armed and ready and I will do what I must to protect what is mine.
