New National Defense Match at Camp Perry

Camp Perry will be hosting a National Defense Match during the 2011 National Matches, which is the first step toward NRA-sanctioned tactical rifle events.

7/26/2011

The inaugural National Defense Match will be held August 13 and 14 at the 2011 National Matches at Camp Perry. It will be an invitation-only event—although spectators are welcome—and a showcase for a match the NRA Competitive Shooting Dept. hopes ranges around the country will adopt as an addition to other tactical-rifle, NRA-sanctioned events. It is designed to mimic real-world scenarios by requiring the use of barriers to engage targets from various shooting positions at ranges from 7 yards to 500 yards, although the course may be shot on a 100-yard range with a designated, scaled-down target.

As the match is in its infancy, loose guidelines permit the use of “any modern defensive rifle” in one of three categories: Tactical Limited; Tactical Optic; and Open. Choice of sights, barrel length and trigger-pull weight determine a gun’s category. Caliber and action are not specified—match directors and event sponsors are allowed significant leeway in structuring home matches.
