The AR-15/M16 and its various forms have served Americans for 50 years. The M16 was carried by troops in Vietnam, fired shots in Grenada and Panama, seen two different conflicts in Iraq and remains one of the most trusted firearms the military can offer.

Military historian Martin K.A. Morgan will join American Rifleman's Mark Keefe and Joe Kurtenbach to discuss the history and success of the M16 during a special session at 2012's NRA Annual Meetings in St. Louis on April 15. Morgan will cover all aspects of the M16, from its birth to its current status, in celebration of the gun's 50th anniversary.

Martin K A Morgan's presentation at the NRA Annual Meeting was extremely informative and superbly entertaining. And when his dad spoke, I couldn't keep my eyes dry. If that wasn't enough, Major Plaster is a master raconteur. A soldier who's 'seen the elephant' but he remains polite and humble. It was an honor to be in their presence!!

Great rifle, capable of very consistant accuracy when the shooter is disciplined. Had a Soldier in my S.D.M. class drill 600 meter steel silhouettes standing offhand with iron sights using M-855 ammo from an M16-A4.

I went from being baffled by the rifle, then disgusted by it, and thoroughly unimpressed by it. Now, as I pass the 50 year mark myself, I have come to appreciate Mr. Stoner's original vision, its evolution, and I believe the current "family" of Mr. Stoner's invention is an excellent group of firearms. I own 1 in .308 Win and one in 5.56NATO. Happy 50th Birthday to the Black Rifle.

AS A MEMBER OF THE 82nd AIRBORNE, WE CARRIED THE M-16 DURING OUR INVASION OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN EARLY 1965. BACK THEN IT WAS OK FOR CITY FIGHTING, BUT MOST MEN COULD NOT HIT ANYTHING OUT PASS 250 YDS. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE M-16 HAS BEEN IMPROVED SINCE THEN.
