Smith & Wesson's Sub-Compact Shield (Page 2)

The S&W M&P Shield offers big-time performance in a discreet package.

Heading to the range I put the Shield through its paces. Delivering accurate fire at 25 yards is easy to do with the Shield—it is comfortable, has effective sights and points naturally. However, because the pistol is designed for personal protection, an appropriate engagement distance of 7 yards was selected for accuracy evaluation. Three brands of defense ammunition were chosen and five consecutive, five-round groups were fired from a bench rest for accuracy. A complete results table is included, but all the ammunition performed admirably and average group sizes varied by only 0.10 inches. Hornady Critical Defense posted the best average at 1.55 inches, but Remington HD had the smallest group; exactly 1 inch. During testing I encountered no stoppages or failures. In fact, I fired more than 400 rounds from the pistol used in evaluation and witnessed close to 4,000 rounds being fired from other Shields. All told there were no more than five or six stoppages, all of them ammunition induced.

The S&W M&P Shield is exactly what I’d expect from a company that understands that it must embrace tradition, but not at the expense of innovation. By holding on to what works, fixing the things that don’t and keeping a finger on the pulse of expanding and changing consumer demand, S&W has produced a handgun purpose-built to not only be carried and concealed by armed citizens, but also to stand up to the rigors and challenges of law enforcement use.

Got one on 6/24/13 from Gunbroker for $429. Shoots well and had no ftf or fte of any kind. Even fed aluminum easily. They are out there if you look, and priced can be reasonable.

@Joel, Why in the world would you have your finger on the trigger when racking the slide? That's just an ND waiting to happen.

Great gun! Over 200 plus rounds and no problems! This IS my conceal gun! Easy to shoot and very accurate! If you can find one you will NOT be disappointed!

When I chamber a first round by racking the slide with the trigger fully depressed, the trigger pull for that first round seems noticeably lighter than the trigger pull I feel when I have racked that first round without depressing the trigger. Anybody notice that circumstance? Why would that be the case?

They may as well be vapor. I can't find one in this part of Fl. and have tried a dozen shops.

Excellent and accurate article. I was fortunate enough to buy a 9mm Shield a few weeks ago. Amazing pistol! Dead solid reliable with everything I put through it. Great sights. Decent crisp trigger. Almost three fingers on the shorter mag and the whole hand around the extended mag. My only objection is the mag release is neither ambidexterous nor reversible. Trivial complaint in comparison. However the thinness of the grip totally alters your grip; like relearning the basics. So practice, practice, practice it till you learn a new natural. Superb pistol I can stake my life on. They got it right!

Vaporware refers to a product that was announced but never becomes available or is officially cancelled. You can't find a Shield because they're so popular that retailers can't keep up with demand. Not the same thing at all.

A single stack, Quality 9mm that is concealable as well as easy to shoot. A GREAT compromise in all aspects. 244 rounds on first day at range without a single issue. The Shield is easier to carry than my Glock 26 gen 4. Very impressed. Thank you S&W.

This looks like an excellent carry gun but where are they? I checked 3 of my gun shops and they said they could not get them yet. In computer lingo we called this "vapor ware".

Why no ambi features. That's what got me interested in the M&P's in the first place
