Featuring Hoffman and his team's efforts to make ends meet as relatively novice miners, "Gold Rush" keeps audiences entertained and enthralled with an old-fashioned American dream style story. The "Gold Rush" men—many of whom also hunt—are staunchly pro-Second Amendment, and not afraid to share.

American Rifleman Editor-in-Chief Mark Keefe had the opportunity to sit down with the boys during SHOT Show 2012.
The M-308 represented Nikon's Precision AR Optic technology, making it an ideal riflescope for an AR platform. Designed for the fastest sighting speed available and long-range accuracy, the M-308 4-16x42 is best suited for .308 Win.

The new M-223 has been developed for 4-16x42 for the first time, and serves as the latest development in the wildly popular M-223 line. It offers great long-range capabilities and is perfect for AR's that sport .223 Caliber rounds.

The MONARCH 5 All Terrain Binoculars offer bright, high-resolution optics and Nikon's near-legendary ruggedness. They're tough, lightweight, effective and affordable. The MONARCH 5 is available in 12x42, 10x42 or 8x42.

The new PROSTAFF 5 Laser Rangefinder 6x21 delivers all of Nikon's signature perks in one palm-sized package. The PROSTAFF 5 offers ranging precision out to 600 yards, with a .1 yard display, and is 10 percent smaller than any of its predecessors.

Mag. in fact translates to the recoil of a .270 Rem.

NRA editors caught up with BLACKHAWK! at Media Day at the Range during SHOT Show 2012 to learn more about how this stock can reduce muzzle flip, improve shooter accuracy, and how this product can help new shooters get on their targets faster with large-caliber rifles. Learn more about what the new CompStock can do (and see it in action) in the video below.

Thanks to a removable sub-chassis, the Nano can be easily modified with replaceable grip frames, and is about as simple to disassemble and maintain as they come. Sights can be removed effortlessly with a hex wrench, and an ambidextrous magazine release contributes to the usability factor for both right- and left-handed shooters.

As suppliers to both the Boeing and Raytheon corporations, Nemo Arms combines aerospace grade materials with an advanced revolutionary machining process, which company Vice President Clint Walker says will transfer to its consumer products.

We caught up with Walker at the show and asked him to take us through Nemo Arms’ new .308 rifle, which is built on an AR-10 platform. Reintroduces Gold Cup

The first Colt Gold Cup pistol, originally called the National Match, was introduced in the 1950s as a gun that competitive shooters could take directly from the dealer’s shelf to the firing line, and soon became the standard for competition guns. The gun was discontinued in the late 90s, but Colt Mfg. is receiving high praise from Colt enthusiasts for reintroducing the Gold Cup as an enhanced pistol for today’s action shooting.

AmericanRifleman.org contributor Sheriff Jim Wilson gladly welcomed the reintroduction of this gun at SHOT Show 2012, and we caught up with him for a closer look to see what all the excitement is about. They're a classic model and have stood the test of time (and fire the ever-popular .45 caliber round, at that).

The problem: A lot of 1911 models can be crazy expensive, keeping the average buyer out of the market. What Rock Island Armory displayed at SHOT Show 2012, however, may change that perspective for many AmericanRifleman.org readers.

Rock Island Armory offers the most affordable entry level 1911 on the market (prices vary, but CheaperThanDirt.com lists the standard 1911 at under $400 and the Tactical at under $500), and prides itself on top-of-the-line customer service.

AmericanRifleman.org caught up with Rock Island President/CEO Martin Tuason at SHOT Show, and he was happy to discuss both his new 1911 Tactical Model and a .22 caliber round that the company is producing. Check out both in the video below:

I am so pleased to report that Colt has brought back its New Frontier single-action revolver. As most of you know, this is its classic single-action with a ramp front sight and an adjustable rear sight. Though the sixgun was announced some time back, this is the first time that I've had a chance to handle and examine one.

Currently, the New Frontier is offered in .44 Spl. and .45 Colt. Barrel lengths are 5 ½ inches and 7 ½ inches, with the popular 4 3/4-inch tube coming soon. The rear adjustable sight is an Elliason and the front sight is that bold ramp that handgunners have always associated with the New Frontier. Stocks are smooth walnut with a gold Colt medallion. The real eye catcher, however, is the beautiful colors in the case-colored frame of this revolver. The 7 1/2-inch gun that I examined had a very smooth, well-timed action, as well.

Stay tuned, because I'll be testing the .44 Spl. and .45 Colt for a feature in American Rifleman in the very near future.

"Lightweight" was a common theme at SHOT Show 2012 (particularly among rifles), and it'd be hard to find a company that did a better job at embracing it than Kimber.

Kimber showed off the new lightweight Mountain Ascent Rifle (pictured above, in the center), which delivers plenty of quality firepower—all at a weight of 4 pounds 13 ounces.

The Mountain Ascent features a Kevlar-enforced carbon fiber stock, barreled action finish in Shad Gray KimPro II, a fluted barrel and bolt and a muzzle brake with a cap that helps reduce recoil.

It's offered in .308 Win., .270 Win., .280 Ack. Imp. and 30-06 Spfd. More details can be found in the video below.

Both lightweight and accurate, the CVA Accura MR (Mountain Rifle) offers everything you could want in a muzzleloader. Sporting a compact, 25-inch Bergara barrel for added accuracy, the Mountain Rifle weighs in at just 6.36 pounds, which was achived by using an aluminum rather than steel frame. Other notable features include the WeatherGuard barrel finish, a Realtree Max-1 camo finish on the stock and a matching Quake Claw Sling, the option of a DuraSight Dead-On scope mount or open fiber-optic sights and CVA’s new Palm Saver Ramrod.

First and foremost is the Segmenting Slug (pictured) for 12-gauge shotguns. The PDX1 Defender slug segments into three pieces fired into certain barriers—combining the advantages of a slug and buckshot.

Also joining the PDX1 Defender ranks are two different rounds for centerfire rifles: the .223 Rem. cartridge and the .308 Win. cartridge. Each round deposits high levels of energy and expands without over-penetration.

Chief among the display was the brand new Silencerco 5.56 Saker—which the company is calling the most advanced rifle suppressor on the market.

The Saker comes with an interchangeable front cap feature that can be customized for a number of different scenarios. The suppressor's baffles are constructed from a material never before seen in silencers, providing unparalleled strength and durability.

The Saker's versatility has the potential to make it an invaluable development. Silencerco CEO Joshua Waldron was happy to give AmericanRifleman.org a complete breakdown of the Saker—and a number of other Silencerco and SWR products—which can be seen in the video below.

Both the appearance and the control configuration of the MKA 1919 looks and feels like the M16 rifle with some adjustments to accommodate the 12-gauge shotgun shells it fires.

The MKA 1919 arrives with two, five-round magazines and three interchangeable chokes. The top of the receiver is fitted with a carrying handle and integral Picatinny rail for mounting rear sights, or any other optical accessories. This shotgun is available with either a black or camouflage finish.

Comment on this post

Springtac Holsters

Springtac has arrived on the scene with a brand new IWB holster that’s been a long time coming. While many defensive pistols can be fitted with tactical lights and lasers, there are very few holsters available that will fit an accessorized pistol for concealed carry.

The Springtac holster is a simple, but ingenious, spring-loaded leather clam shell that securely holds pistols with just about any accessory. The internal three-spring retention system can be adjusted for the best fit. Holster models are available to accommodate small, medium and even full-size accessorized handguns.

Using advanced design techniques and CNC machining, Heizer has developed a thin profile, monolithic frame over-under derringer chambered for modern defensive calibers.

The Double Tap will be available with either an aircraft-grade aluminum or titanium frame. Barrels will be available in .45 ACP or 9 mm, with or without porting, and a compartment in the grip holds two extra rounds. Complete pistols have an MSRP from $499 to $799 depending on the options selected, while interchangeable barrels will range from $249 to $319.

This long gun features the same grip and fire controls of the popular PMR-30 pistol. The rifle also uses the same innovative pie-wedge 30-round magazines as the pistol, allowing for both ammunition and magazine compatibility.

The RMR-30 rifle features an adjustable stock, Picatinny rails for optics and lasers, and an unloaded weight of just 4 pounds. The 16-inch barrel is threaded to accept muzzle accessories like flash hiders and sound suppressors.

The NRA Editors had a blast shooting a lot of different guns at Media Day at the range, and one of the standouts had to be Smith & Wesson's M&P 15 Whisper.

Smith & Wesson's latest M&P model builds upon the brand's established M&P line and offers sub-sonic and supersonic capabilities with consistent performance and accuracy.
Suffice to say, today's marketed is littered with gear that could keep you alive in a zombie Apocalypse. But no product has ever quite embraced the theme as much as the ACE LTD. DoubleStar Zombie Slayer AK.

Combined all the best elements of a standard AK with, well... a chainsaw, the Zombie Slayer can keep the undead at bay from a distance or in close combat.

AmericanRifleman.org was able to get a quick demonstration and breakdown of the Zombie Slayer. Learn more about its specs in the video below:

CCI has developed a subsonic .22 load that is both accurate and quiet, and it comes out of the barrel at a pretty good speed for a subsonic round.

This round will be excellent for suppressed firearms and is even quiet enough for training new shooters without the need of hearing protection, which makes it easier for everyone to hear crucial range commands. AmericanRifleman.org editors had the opportunity to learn how quiet this round truly is at Media Day when we shot it with the ear plugs out.

Comment on this post

Rock River Arms Left-Handed AR

A frequent request from readers is for more information about guns that are cut for the southpaws out there. However, some 1911s just seem to stand out from the others.

The SIG Sauer Spartan is one of these stand outs. The Spartan has all the desired features of 1911s, such as combat sights and skeletonized hammer, but it really stands out with its finish. The Spartan comes with a Nitron finish that looks bronze. In fact, SIG calls it oil rubbed bronze.

The Spartan will be available for a suggested retail price of $1,359, and should really get people talking at the range.

The 2012 Mayan Apocalypse is less than a year away, and it may be time to start preparing... if you believe in those sorts of things.

Even if you don't, the new 2012 Executive Survivors Kit from LAN World, Inc. can make for a great emergency kit, and it was certainly one of the most interesting little finds at SHOT Show 2012. LAN World partnered with Stag Arms to produce a versatile, fun and downright useful "emergency kit" that's perfect for Apocaylpse-mongers and the simply vigilant souls alike.

Each kit includes:

- Stag Arms Model 2 AR-15 Rifle
- EoTech 517 Holographic Red Dot Optic
- 60 Rounds of Quality Ammunition
- Stag Arms Field Repair Kit
- Two 30/10 Round Magazines
- First Aid Kit
- MRE Field Ration Meal
- Gerber MP 600 Multi-Plier
- Gerber Omnivore LED Flashlight
- Otis AR-15 Cleaning Kit
- Silent Sling
- 4 AA back up batteries
- Quality hard sided rifle Case

The gun I principally traveled to SHOT Show this year to see this year was on the last position on the lower range at Media Day At The Range. It is the Uzi Rifle, and it is actually a .22 Long Rifle rimfire version of the legendary Israeli design. I have shot a number of Uzis over the years, including the semi-automatic carbine when I was a teenager to the full-automatic submachine guns and the difficult to control Mini Uzi in full automatic, and I must say this was almost as much fun as a full-automatic Uzi. OK, maybe not as fun, but close. The gun is made by Carl Walther in Germany and imported into the United States by Umarex, with the name and likeness of the gun being licensed by Israel Weapon Industries.

The rifle version features the metal folding stock, 26- or 33-inches long in overall length (folded or unfolded), with the 17.9-inch long barrels is surrounded by a false suppressor. But this gun has it all, the grip safety, the manual safety and the cocking handle on the top, except of course it is a closed bolt blowback operated semi-auto only. It is fed by a polymer 20-round magazine that is loaded through the grip and its release on the lower left of the grip works just like the center-fire Uzis. Without the magazine it weighs seven pounds, 10 ounces. The front post and rear aperture are faithful to the original Uzi.

I burned magazine after magazine out of the gun and tore up a metal plate. I reluctantly had to give the gun back, but one of the first guns is already ordered for the next season of “American Rifleman Television.”

Comment on this post

Italian Awesomeness

By Mark Keefe

OK, I’m pretty sure that is not a real word, but if it was actually in the dictionary, it perfectly describes the Beretta ARX, or at least the version I fired at Media Day On The Range. Of course, the futuristic ARX is the current modular selective-fire service rifle of the Italian Army made by Beretta in Gardone, Italy.

The version I shot is indeed a Beretta ARX but chambered in, wait for it, .22 Long Rifle. It has all the handling and controls of the center-fire rifle. Of course it differs in being semi-auto only, and I’m not sure a grenade launcher would fit. Not having one available (the grenade launcher) on Monday, I am unable to report accurately on that.

The rifle is made by Umarex in Germany for Beretta under license and breaks down just like the 5.56x45 mm NATO ARX, and the bolt handle, which is mounted to the bolt, is reciprocating and reversible. It is fed from the same magazine Umarex uses in the Colt and Heckler & Koch AR-platform rimfires, probably the best .22 rimfire magazine I have ever used.

The bad news, despite its awesomeness, it will not be available until later on this year. Of course, the fact that the new gun is featured in the “Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare” video game franchise doesn’t hurt.

All right, I wish I could take credit for this, but it seems I was just thinking on a parallel track with the folks at Springfield Armory. Chad Dyer, Springfield’s marketing genius, called me a few months back to ask what I thought the next gun from Springfield should be. I responded that it was time for Springfield to do a single-stack compact appropriate for discrete carry in the Xtreme Duty (XD) line. As to caliber, 9 mm was all the rage at the time, but a .45 ACP would be better in my view.

It turns out Springfield already had the gun in prototype form, and I was able to shoot it this week. The single-stack .45 ACP-chambered XD-S is based on the proven XD and XD(M), but is much, much smaller and there are some differences between the earlier variant. I met up with Rob Leatham, Springfield’s leading shooter, and had him go over the little gun with me. The XD-S has an overall length of 6.3 inches, is 4-inches high from the base of the magazine to the top of the rear sight and measures 0.9 inches in width across the slide and it is still only an inch wide across the takedown lever. The frame is, of course, made of polymer, and it comes with the choice of two backstraps to better fit the individual user. The slide is of Melonite–coated steel, and the ramp is fully supported. The barrel measures a mere 3.3 inches in length and the gun weighs 29 ounces unloaded. There is an external extractor on the slide’s right and a loaded chamber indicator on its top. The front and rear sights are dovetailed into the slide with two white dots on the rear and a red fiber-optic front.

This is a little gun, but it was surprisingly controllable mini .45. The excellent checkering pattern allows you to really hold on, and the gun settles back down in the hands very quickly. This is a game changer in its category. I have asked for the first one to review it for American Rifleman, and odds are Springfield will get a check from me instead of the gun it sends. The price has not been announced but I am told it will be, to coin a much overused word, “aggressive.”

Their U.S. market launch will include two polymer-frame striker fired 9 mm pistols—the Model F full size that takes an 18-round magazine and the Model C compact.

These pistols stand out from the crowed with their optional quick sight acquisition system in which the milled-in rear sight is set in front of the barrel chamber instead of the rear of the slide. The trigger is smooth and light with a short reset, and the low bore allows for reduced muzzle flip. These pistols will retail below $500 dollars.

Comment on this post

GLOCK G21 Gen4

GLOCK has introduced the G21 .45 ACP Safe Action pistol with the new Gen4 features, including a multiple backstrap system for fitting a variety of hand sizes and a dual recoil spring assembly.
The DB380 and DB9 can now easily be suppressed by purchasing a conversion kit. The new kits are suppressed using a "wet" system that reduces both recoil and sound. In fact, <a title="Full review of Diamondback suppressed handguns.
By John Zent

One of 2012's brightest ideas in sighting solutions is Trijicon's TARS (Tactical Advanced Rifle Scope), an ultra-long-range precision optic made by the Michigan company whose rugged ACOG sight tops battle rifles of American special-ops troops in dangerous venues worldwide. Beside the clear military/LE applications, the 3X-15X-50mm scope will also appeal to long-range hunters and competitors. Like most Trijicon sights, TARS offers reticle illlumination (and four reticle options, including an MOA and the exclusive JW Mil ballistic systems), based on a super-efficient LED powered by one CR2032 battery that will yield 30,000 hours user life.

In my first go with TARS, I fired on 1,000-yard targets at a range outside Las Vegas, and, after missing my first two shots, hit the distant metal plate four times straight. Despite considerable desert mirage, light transmission and image sharpness were superb.

If the robust scope--with its big 34mm tube—proves as durable and foolproof as the ACOG and Trijicon's Accupoint scope--tactical snipers and other long-range sharpshooters will find this newcomer one of the be options available at any price.

The video below features American Rifleman Editor-in-Chief Mark Keefe getting briefed on the TARS, and then taking a few shots of his own.

Springfield's new XD-S was one of the most popular guns at Media Day at the Range 2012, and with good reason. The newest addition to the XD line, the XD-S features a slim, single stack frame that still manages to deliver the infamous .45 caliber firepower.

The XD-S's slim feel and comfortable design make it easy to handle and shoot. American Rifleman Editor-in-Chief Mark Keefe wanted to see the gun put through its paces by a true pro at Media Day, and so he turned to champion shooter Rob Leatham. Check out the results in the video above!

Described by the company's representatives as something akin to a miniature 1911, the Micro CDP .380 delivers a sturdy, reliable build, solid stopping power and a built in laser sight in a package that's ideal for anyone to use in a carry conceal capacity. All told, the Micro CDP weighs in at 17 ounces and its smooth single action trigger system maintains the accuracy of a far larger model.

Kimber representatives were ready and willing to discuss the new Micro CDP .380 with the AmericanRifleman.org staff, and you can get your own glimpse of their new product by watching the video below.

That said, a neat find from the opening day of SHOT Show is Leupold's VX-R Zombie Riflescope.

A play on the company's 1.25-4x20mm Patrol line, the VX-R Zombie Riflescope delivers all of Leupold's best perks—from its ability to make precision finger click adjustments and second generation Argon/Krypton waterproofing right on down to the standard Leupol Lifetime Guarantee.

The scope embraces its name by incorporating some fancy design work on its caps—a zombie head on one, and brains on other... because what's a zombie analogy without brains?

MPT Industries has released its own set of firearm oil and gun grease that not only meet, but exceed military specifications and standards. The lubricants are synthetic and are meant to do far more than the standard petroleum oil that has served the primary gun cleaning tool for over a century.

The MPT firearm oil is a water resistant lubricant that's designed to penetrate the metal and get past the surface and comes in a handy individual half-ounce lubricant pen or in larger bottles.

The MPT gun grease formula is a slick, long lasting grease that's available in 2-ounce tubs.

The P223 is a 3x32X scope that will be available for $149.
Now here's an opportunity that not many folks would even consider passing up—firing off a few rounds with a real, old school gatling gun.

Colt brought a Gatling gun to SHOT Show's 2012 Media Day at the Range, and there wasn't anything that could stop the NRA Editors from giving it a try. You can see it in action thanks to the video in this post.

It's not easy to make make a classic even better, but Colt brought its A-game with the new Colt .380 Mustang Pocketlite.

Small, lightweight, durable and accurate, the new .380 Pocketlite is being pitched as an improved version of Colt's popular classic Mustang model.

Weighing less than a pound—and that's after the six-round magazine has been loaded—the .380 Mustang Pocketlite is set to be a compact and reliable personal defense option.

Check out video coverage of American Rifleman Managing Editor Aaron Carter shooting the ultra-cool Umarex/IWI Uzi .22 LR Pistol at the 2012 Media Day at the Range in Boulder City, Nev.

New for 2012 from Umarex/IWI is the Uzi .22 Carbine and the .22 LR Pistol. Both feature a 20-round capacity, and metal receivers.

The Uzi .22 Carbine is intimidating at first glance, but after shooting it we found it was low in recoil and just plain fun to shoot. Other features include a foldable stock, hidden Picatinny rail, front sight adjustable for elevation, rear sight adjustable for windage, grip safety and a detachable sling swivel.

The .22 LR Pistol features a lower Picatinny rail, front sight for elevation, rear sight adjustable for windage and grip safety. The overall length is 9.5 inches.

SHOT Show has plenty to offer, but ultimately the first thing the NRA Editors look for is the same thing you'd want to see yourself—the new hardware. It all starts on Monday, Jan. 16 with the annual Media Day at the Range.

NRA Editors will be on the range all day getting hands on experience with some of most talked about releases of 2012, and you can bet that the staff of AmericanRifleman.org will be on the scene to bring you updates about some of the industry's most highly anticipated new models.

There's no telling exactly what will be available at Media Day, but there are five guns our staff is already looking forward to shooting:

• SIG Sauer P224 Pistol (Pictured)
• Umarex/IWI UZI .22 Carbine and .22 LR Pistol
• Ruger SR22
• Glock Gen4
• Colt Mustang PocketLite .380

And that's just some of the stuff we know about!

Expect news about each of these new products—and plenty more—starting on Monday, Jan. 16, right here at AmericanRifleman.org's Straight from SHOT Show 2012 Blog.

Comment on this post

Gearing Up: Your Home for SHOT Show 2012 Coverage

There’s no doubt about it, the SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) Show is a big deal.
