 (10 Photos)

The .45 ACP is still one of the most popular self-defense rounds in America, even more than 100 years after its development, because it works.

Still Going

For over 100 years, soldiers, civilians and police have trusted the .45 Auto cartridge. The cartridge and the handgun it was initially chambered in are more popular now than ever.

    Why a .45? Because they don't make a .46 !

I first shot the 1911 in the military. Great gun. Sgt York won his Medal of Honer w it. I maybe 'old school', but it's been said, ' if it was good enough for Sgt York, it's good enough for me'. My carry is a Colt Officers stoked w 230gr. Federal Hydrashok. Heavy? Yes, but inside the waist band it doesn't print, even under a loose T-shirt.

The best gun is the gun with the most muzzel energy that you will csrry- small light weight is the touch stone, not a hogs leg meant for military combat-- high teck ammo will give you more energy from a hollow point 9mm than a convetional 45 ball round - a 18oz 9mm semi-automatic with corbon pwr'bal is much better choice-- 38spl is the most carried gun! big caliber cowboys use their guns on the range, not as a carry for protectionQ- bigger hole is wrong! under 1000ft/sec the temporary wound channel will close anyway- a 45 is 850 ft/sec at most (without high tec ammo)the small light weight nine milimeter and the light weight 38spl w/corbon pwr'bal or DPX is a way better choice!

Come on Ralph...the Colt 1911A1 is one of the thinnest weapons ever made and perfect for conceal and carry. Of course, if you need 15 rds to put down your Bogey...well, by all means, a 9mm may be your piece.

Well.... As a former Gov. guy, I guess for all those years I was outguned!!!? Because most of us carried a 9mm of both US mfg. and/or Walther (which I had). Larger cal does in fact make a bigger hole, but size of the round and accuracy of the shooter very well makes the difference. The idea, unless your out hunting, is to remain "one of the crowd" and NOT stick out with a bigh bulge somewhere on your body. One additional item, look up the blistics of the "Glassar" (sp?) slug. Best "stopper" out there REGARDLESS OF CAL.!

My favorite 45 cal pistol is my H&K USP45 full size. Great gun for carry. Super accurate & reliable, never any failures to feed/eject.

Have 1 of 1st Detonics sold in Tulare Co., in the socialist republic of kalifornication. (For further comment on this subject, portervillepost.com "Muster RIGHT Here, With Sgt. Mack".) Have carried it for years. Spoke w/ a Concord, Ca. P.D. & he said P.D. commissioned 1-shot stop w/ min. shoot-thru study & came up .45ACP. I took a predator out of a tree, w/ 1 shot. I'm SOLD!!!
