Externally, there is no difference in the .223 Rem. and the 5.56 NATO cartridge. The difference is found in the pressure each cartridge generates and in the way the chambers are cut into the barrel.

The primary weapon system for all Marines is the M16A4 chambered in 5.56. Marines snipers exist for two primary purposes, to gather intelligence and discriminately engage high value targets [(]commanders, heavy weapons crewmen, communications gear & optics on armored vehicles, etc.[)]. The Marine Rifleman trains to engage point targets out to 500 meters whereas 8541/0317 Scout Snipers can engage targets out to 1000 meters and beyond [(]weapon system & and battlefield conditions specific[)]. The 5.56 and it's civilian equivalent, .223 Remington, is the primary cartridge for the finest warfighting organizations in the free world for a reason, it works. This may contradict the opinions of many, but when loaded with the appropriate bullet for the intended target and operational environment, and fired out of a rifle with sufficient barrel length, the effects are quite effective. I personally have carried both 7.62 & 5.56 caliber precision rifles into theater and have nd that they both have their advantages [(]weight, commonality of caliber with fellow Marines[)] & disadvantages [(]weight, barrier defeat and range limitations[)].
