Steyr AUG
Steyr AUG

One of the most famous tactical rifles ever.

By Tyler Kreis

When my phone rings and I see National Firearms Museum Senior Curator Doug Wicklund’s name on my caller I.D., I immediately know there’s a gun waiting for me. The other day he called and I went down to the museum to pick up the new arrivals and saw a bunch of boxes with Steyr’s name on them. Steyr makes some fine hunting rifles, but they also make one of the most famous tactical rifles ever, the AUG/A3.

Besides being fun and accurate, here is the quick skinny about this gun:

  1. It’s a gas operated semi-automatic.
  2. You can purchase additional length barrels and swap them out depending on your needs.
  3. It comes with two 30 round magazines.
  4. With the 16-inch barrel, it’s overall length is 28.25 inches.
  5. Shoots .223 Rem.

Even if you don’t know much about tactical rifles, one look at this gun and you’ll recognize it. It’s a great gun for all shapes and sizes of people. If you want to see this thing in action, here’s a little video of me trying it out; for research purposes only, of course.

For a more in-depth review of the AUG from Senior Executive Editor Brian Sheetz, check the pages of American Rifleman magazine this spring.
